Ideal IDP Roster and Scoring

Well you did it, you finally chose to stop being a pussy and decided to add individual defensive players to your roster. It'd be more exciting you said, it'd be different you said, it would add another element you said.
And then you went and fucked the whole thing up by only adding one spot on the whole damn roster. You made 5 tackles worth 3 points and you suck for it. The few idp players you did add to your amateur hour league all got drafted in the much later rounds, some even after kickers. Why did ya even bother.
Why? why do people do this to themselves and to their leaguemates. I looked around and, unsurprisingly, the number one thing my research concluded over and over again was that people don't know how to create a good idp format. The complaint can be found over and over again. There are some resources out there for good roster and scoring, but most are a little flawed or outdated. That's why we here at UFO have decided that, like most things we do, ours is better and you are gon' learn today.

The biggest problem the idp community faces today is that there is no standardized format and this just breaks my heart. How can the fantasy community not come together and take care of this seemingly simple problem? Even the best sites out there for idp is forced to use categories like "tackle heavy format" or "big play format" in their rankings. We, as a community, need to come together and start the revolution. It is fun, it is different, and it does add another element to the league. The problem isn't idp, the problem is you fucked it up. Luckily for you, we've spent years perfecting our league. Literally hundreds of man hours wasted in our fantasy group chat arguing about every single tiny friggin' thing and the end result is a league format we feel equalizes the positions as best possible.
We molded our league on the principle that idp players should at least attempt to have the same value as their offensive brethren. A phrase we used to use was that linebackers were the "running backs" of the defensive side of the ball. Of course we know that's no longer true. The way fantasy has gone these last few years linebackers are now more like the wide receivers of you league. Though there aren't true doppelgangers for each of the offensive positions, you can create your league in such a way that resembles what you are already used to. You know your tight ends aren't going to score as much as your wide receivers, and you draft accordingly. Much like running backs are becoming more and more scarce, defensive lineman that produce consistently are becoming harder and harder to find.
So without further ado....
Our IDP League Roster and Scoring Format
Let's start with teams, there should be 14 of them. Don't be one of those pansies in a 10 man league. You're here because you want a challenge, right? In a 14 man league the depth flies off the shelf and this is your best opportunity to show your stuff. Your average leaguemates will fail once the top name talent falls to the wayside and you will clean up. Anyone can win a small league where everyone has rb1's and wr1's on their roster. It's a lottery ticket, not real fantasy. A 14 man league lets you play every opponent once for 13 weeks and then its playoff time. You're depth will shine through with the knowledge you'll find on this site. Eliminating luck and increasing knowledge's influence on your league is paramount and thus a large roster is the best way to accomplish this. Our roster does just this.
ROSTER
Offense:
1QB
2WR
2RB
2Flex
1TE
1K
Defense
2DL
2LB
2DB
2Flex
Bench
22
1IR
With 17 starting positions and 22 bench positions, depth becomes crucial. Bye week optimization is lethal and finding playable players on the waiver wire to line up to your tough weeks is incredibly hard. Arming yourself with the knowledge of every single player in the NFL is critical. Sick of losing because of bullshit? Make your league harder. Over the next few years we will expand the roster by two players every year during the rookie draft until the roster reaches 43. At this point decisions between youth and veterans will become more intriguing, but that's a day for another article.
The large roster and two flex positions per offense and defense allow for massive roster optimization and flexibility during bye weeks. No longer will you be picking through A listers left and right. You gotta know your shit and when you do you will win year afer year until your leaguemates catch up.
Scoring
Too many leagues attempt to go idp and then make the players worthless. Our scoring system equalizes the offense with the defense. Another flaw in most formats is they are either "big play" or "tackle heavy", but why not both? We love fantasy for the excitement of hitting certain goals and watching the score go up n up. What's better than sitting around on Sunday and your wide receiver has 95 yards and there's 4 minutes left in the game? How about a bonus for your idp players? How bout some excitement? Our format gives you this.

As you can see if you suffered through that longass list, our scoring has idp bonuses. No feeling is better in idp than sitting around on Sunday watching your star linebacker racking up tackles waiting for him to hit the ten tackle bonus. Watching your best DE get a sack in the first quarter and just licking your lips for that 2 tackle bonus is titillating. Our scoring also gives you that "home run" feeling you can get from offense. Watching Julio Jones break one off for an 80 yard td is great, but just wait til your favorite safety snags a huge interception and returns it for a 60 yard touchdown. That play is damn near a week winner and nothing is more exciting.
This scoring system lets linebackers score like wide receivers, defensive backs like running backs and defensive ends like tight ends. No longer must your defense hide in shame; there are two equal sides to football and now there are two equal sides to your fantasy teams.
Well there it is guys, our idp roster and scoring format. We hope you like the bonuses. Actually, we don't give a shit what you like, we're UFO, it's kinda our thing. as always feel free to bitch at me @cory_moniz on twitter or talk to us on the league chat on the homepage.
