Welcome Dak Romo!?
What a terrific situation the Cowboys have this season, finally a backup quarterback that can play in Romo's place and win games without him. I must pause a moment and just laugh at how badly the media is trying to push Romo out. Instead I will just show you how one year removed how much the situation in Dallas has changed. I mean last year if Weeden would have won 4 or even 5 in a row would anyone even for a second consider benching Romo when he got healthy? OF COURSE NOT! So why the foolishness now? Because the media want to sell the controversy in order to get their pathetic attention (Clicks = $$) ...ESPN i'm looking right at you.
Defense Wins Championships
I'm going to start with the most important difference this year from last year and even from 2014 and it is the defense. The defense this season has been much more successful from previous adaptations. While the defense in 2014 did manage to do pretty well causing 18 interceptions and 13 fumble recoveries last years defense was only at a pathetic 8 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries. 2016 is off to a great start with 4 ints and 5 FR. The most impressive stat that the 2016 defense has over the 2015 and 2014 defense is points allowed per game, they are only allowing 17.8 PPG ( 23.4 in 2015 and 22 in 2014). this defense is definitely doing its job but if this team wants to get to the promised land they will have to step it up a notch and stop giving up the yards. You are probably asking what this has to do with Dak and Romo ... this defense is a huge reason the Cowboys are 5-1 right now regardless if Romo was playing or not.
Running Away With Wins
Another great thing to compare with Dak's success this year and Romo's success in 2014 is the run game and the time of possession. In 2014 Demarco Murray led quite an impressive campaign opening the door for Romo, Dez and T Will to thrive, Zeke is doing the same for Dak and company so far this season. But Zeke is doing much better than D Murr did while the season still is young Zeke may be able to get near the 2k mark at this pace running for 579 yds in the last four games alone. This is a huge factor in a QBs success and while Run DMC did run for 1000 last year it wasn't enough to mask Weeden's and Moore's god awful play. Now i'm not saying Zeke is masking bad play of Dak or that D Murr did that for Romo. I'm just saying having a run game helps the QB in so many ways.
Dak Is The Future, But The Time Is Now
As a lifelong Cowboys fan I have to say I am very excited for the future of this franchise. Probably the first time since "The Trade"... Dak is the best QB I have seen Dallas bring in since Romo and Quincy Carter (what a shame). Dak can definitely handle himself well and is doing great but I will not trust him yet in situations where Romo thrives. This was all that the team needed last year, some wins while Romo was out so they did not need to rush him back in from a broken collar bone. We all know how that ended up though romo started 4 games only finished 2 and 3 of the 4 wins on the season came from those 4 games. Now that there is a QB behind Romo that can fill in and not throw the season away why would you still not trust in Romo??? It is foolish to not put him back in when he is 100%, BUT MAKE SURE THAT HE IS 100% he's the best chance to win it all and if Romo does go down again you know you have a backup that will be competent enough to fill in and take over in the future. I know the haters are hoping they keep Romo out .. there is a reason for this they know how good he is. While i know his time is nearly up and if Romo does falter that may be the end of the era, but how could you not trust a QB that has played phenomenally throughout his career and let him take over his team now that his team is finally well rounded which has never been the case in Romo's career. Dak is without a doubt playing terrific, I hope he starts being more careful with the ball though the fumbles are making me uneasy but the kid is doing great and I have nothing against him I just feel in order to win it all we need that extra that Romo will bring.
